All Aboard the History of Mass Transportation in Rhode Island

Part #: ARC-534671

Arcadia Publishing

All Aboard the History of Mass Transportation in Rhode Island. All Aboard: The History of Mass Transportation in Rhode Island covers the period from the Civil War to the creation of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA). Each of the seven chapters examines a particular form of travel and its impact on the people and surrounding area. From the horse-drawn omnibus, horse car, and cable tramway to the rumbling buses of modern times, this book welcomes readers to explore various types of bygone transport. As well as a cornucopia of transportation street images, the book reproduces documents, badges, and tokens to provide a comprehensive glimpse of yesteryear; it includes little known facts and stories of life on the road. Learn how the horse car beat out the old-fashioned omnibus to dominate city streets during the Gilded Age, and how the electric streetcar quickly replaced the horse car by the 1890s. Discover the joy that grandparents experienced taking an open bloomer car to Rocky Point or Roger Williams Park. See the rubber-tired, trackless trolleys that ran on electric current from overhead wires. Explore the action of the 1902 railway strike in Providence and Pawtucket that led to the mobilization of the state militia.

Chronicles of Douglas County Colorado

Part #: ARC-191792

Arcadia Publishing

Chronicles of Douglas County Colorado. Castle Rock Writers bring readers a collection of vintage images and sketches of Douglas County from approximately 1861 to 1950, covering the settling of towns such as Parker and Sedalia and rural areas like Cherry Valley and Daniel's Park. Early homesteaders, adventurers, and prospectors journeyed west following the 900-plus miles along the Cherokee Trail, seeking the wealth of gold or needing the curative air of Colorado. On the long and arduous trip, travelers stopped at the Twenty Mile House in Parker or the Pretty Woman Ranch on the First Territorial Road. They needed to clean off the dust and dirt and enjoy a nourishing meal before the final push to Denver and beyond. Some simply stayed. They homesteaded ranches, staked out mines, and built small towns in the rolling plains, mesas, forested hills, and mountains that make up the 843 square miles of Douglas County. In the first half of the 20th century, the region grew into cohesive communities, where families thrived through ingenuity and hard work. Neighbors supported neighbors.

Railroads of Omaha and Council Bluffs

Part #: ARC-520421

Arcadia Publishing

Railroads of Omaha and Council Bluffs. Well into the 20th century, the railroad industry implemented a series of great technological changes that revolutionized rail transit in America. The twin cities of Omaha and Council Bluffs, serving as Union Pacific headquarters and the nation's nucleus of continental train travel, witnessed the bulk of these changes. Through a collection of captivating photographs, Railroads of Omaha and Council Bluffs documents the transformations that took place in the railroad industry and the impact those changes made on these two cities, as well as the rest of the country. The creation of the "streamlined" passenger train, the transition from steam to diesel power, the golden years of Omaha's Union Station, and the revolution of railroad freight service through mergers and government deregulation are just some of the events explored in this fascinating book.

North Beach Peninsula's IR&N

Part #: ARC-570204

Arcadia Publishing

North Beach Peninsula's IR&N. For nearly 40 years, the quirky little narrow-gauge railroad, begun in 1889 by the Ilwaco Railway and Navigation Company, ran along the North Beach Peninsula in southwestern Washington. The train provided the primary transportation link from Ilwaco in the south to Nahcotta in the north, making peninsula communities accessible to one another and supplying a reliable route to outside markets for the area's major industries—oystering, logging, and cranberry farming. A tide table, not a timetable, governed the railroad's schedule, allowing coordination with the steamers that met the train at either end of its daily journeys. Old-timers of the area still speak affectionately of the train's unorthodox schedule and its informal and accommodating service. And they remember with fondness that the IR &N was widely known as the “Irregular, Ramblin' and Never-get-there Railroad.”

The Ski Train

Part #: CRM-SKITRAINBOOK

Colorado Railroad Museum

Throughout the 1950s and 1960s the Ski Train was youth-oriented-dominated by the Eskimo Club, whose members ranged in age from 7 to 17, Today, many older Denver natives credit the Ski Train and the Eskimo Club for introducing them to skiing. The 1980's brought hard times to the Ski Train. Ridership steadily declined, and the 1915 vintage railcars began to show their age. In 1988, Ansco Investment Company, a Denver based company, acquired the train with its purchase by its parent company of the D&RGW railroad. Under this management the "New Ski Train" was born, the old cars were sold and replaced by "Tempo" cars purchased from Canada. Each year introduced a new generation of skiers not just the joy of skiing, but to joys of traveling by train, as well.

Rio Grande. . .to the PACIFIC!

Part #: SDB-RIOGRANDETOTHEPACIFIC

Sundance Books

From the book: "This account of the Rio Grande system can be visualized in any of four different ways. It is a chronology of the development of the system's trackage-why it was built or bought, used, sold or abandoned. Motive power is traced in considerable detail, including the first complete compilation of RGW locomotives. The story of the railroad's activities can be read as one would read a novel, or the reader can discover how the system was assembled, company by company, each with its own peculiar contribution to the organization at the time."

Railroads of the Pikes Peak Region: 1870-1900

Part #: ARC-528823

Arcadia Publishing

Railroads of the Pikes Peak Region: 1870-1900. During the gilded age of rail travel in the late 1800s, Colorado Springs became one of the primary portals of westward expansion and a hub for both passenger and freight traffic. Over thousands of miles of tracks traveled merchants, industrialists, tourists, and fortune seekers, all bent on enjoying what Colorado had to offer either on a temporary or permanent basis. Much of the history of the Pike's Peak Region was predicated on the railroads, and the growth that the area enjoyed was dependent on the new residents and the trains that brought them.

Boulder 1859-1919

Boulder 1859-1919

Part #: ARC-558905

Arcadia Publishing

Born out of the 1859 Pikes Peak gold rush, Boulder sits along the Front Range where the Rocky Mountains meet the plains. Discoveries of gold, silver, telluride, and coal nearby put the little supply town on the map, and early miners, farmers, and businessmen prospered there. The railroad's arrival in 1873 brought more newcomers who cultivated a diverse community full of new businesses, social organizations, and schools, and the town flourished despite the social problems and economic fluctuations that were typical of early mining towns. By the 1890s, education, health, and tourism had become significant to Boulder's economic development, a pattern that continues to this day. Great change came about during the early 1900s in the form of a citywide alcohol prohibition, the influenza epidemic, and the closure of the “Switzerland Trail” railroad in 1919, but Boulder weathered these difficult times even as it witnessed the end of the great railroading era.

Summit County

Part #: ARC-548463

Arcadia Publishing

Summit County Book. In 1859, a group of men from Denver crossed the Continental Divide with the hope of finding gold in the Blue River Valley. Their initial success changed the landscape as towns blossomed across the countryside, and ranches, which provided much needed food, were established along the lower part of the valley. The arrival of the railroads in 1882 facilitated the movement of people and goods in and out of the area. The railroads also made mining operations much more profitable and diminished the isolation of the county's residents. Women and children began arriving in greater numbers in the 1880s, bringing with them the refinements of the Victorian era. The influx of families spurred the establishment of churches, libraries, social clubs, and hospitals and, at the same time, discouraged gambling, drinking, and prostitution.
